UNA-USA--Iran Dialogue

For nearly six years, a group of former American diplomats and regional experts have been meeting directly with a group of Iranian academics and policy advisers. The dialogue, organized by the United Nations Association of the USA in partnership with the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, has covered the range of strategic issues between the US and Iran, and the group has sought to provide an informed, productive analysis of Iran and the US to each government.

UNA-USA has a long track record with substantive, track-two policy dialogues, beginning with its work as a behind-the-scenes venue for the US and the Soviet Union during the Cold War, and more recently, with its US-China dialogue. Given the lack of formal relations between Washington and Tehran, UNA-USA decided to initiate a similar dialogue with Iran in 2002. With support from our foundation, as well as from other foundations and grantmaking organizations, the dialogue has operated informally and unofficially as a means of promoting greater understanding between the two countries.
