School of the Americas Watch (SOAW)

SOA Watch is nonviolent, grassroots movement dedicated to closing the School of the Americas, a military training institute at Fort Benning, Georgia, that teaches combat tactics to Latin American soldiers. SOA Watch endeavors through creative protest as well as legislative and media work to stand in solidarity with the people of Latin America, to close the School of the Americas, and to change the militarized U.S. foreign policy that institutions like the school represent.

Our foundation supported the stage program at SOA Watch's 2008 Vigil at the gates of Fort Benning. A number of artists and musicians spoke and performed from the stage to an audience of nearly 20,000 activists. They were joined by victims and the family members of victims of political violence in Latin America. SOA Watch firmly believes that we can better reach a broader audience by combining the cultural elements of its annual event with the voices of those who have been most affected by misguided policy in Latin America.
