Panzi Hospital, South Kivu, DRC

Panzi Hospital, located in South Kivu, DRC, has been at the forefront of the medical response to survivors of sexual violence for the past decade, and receives approximately 3,500 survivors of sexual violence per year from North and South Kivu, neighboring provinces, and Rwanda and Burundi. Panzi Hospital has long been actively involved in the multi-sectoral response to sexual violence.

However, Panzi recognizes that medical response represents merely one facet of the fight against sexual violence, that legal assistance is also a vital component, and that sexual violence against women and girls will continue unabated unless the larger issue of impunity surrounding sexual violence is addressed. A grant from the Caipirinha Foundation has supported Panzi Hospital in its efforts to establish legal aid and community prevention programs to eliminate sexual violence against women.
