Middle East Studies Association (MESA)

The Middle East Studies Association (MESA) is a non-political association that fosters the study of the Middle East, promotes high standards of scholarship and teaching, and encourages public understanding of the region and its peoples through programs, publications, and services that enhance education, further intellectual exchange, recognize professional distinction, and defend academic freedom.

With our assistance, the Middle East Studies Association is preparing the MESA Online Guide to Middle Eastern and Islamic World Films, 1983-2006. The Guide will expand MESA's online resources serving college and pre-college educators and the public. The Online Guide project builds on earlier documentation efforts and incorporates the ongoing activities of the MESA Bulletin and the MESA FilmFest. The latter has been a major feature of MESA's annual meetings for 24 years. It is the only film festival in which all the films shown have been previewed by a committee of academics and selected according to unbiased, non-political, aesthetic, and scholarly standards. Although the festival features a broad spectrum of films, documentaries designed for use in educational settings are particularly emphasized. While the project begins with the most recent films, ultimately it will incorporate all MESA's data into a modern, searchable, and user friendly online publication. Educators, filmmakers, and the public will have access to a critical guide and source information.
