Fifth Annual Kurdish Film Festival 2008

5th Annual Kurdish Film FestivalBerlin, May 24-June 1, 2008

The Fifth Kurdish Film Festival took place in Berlin this year, May 24-June 1, 2008. Since its launch in 2002 it has become the largest Kurdish Film Festival in the world, and an important meeting place for Kurdish filmmakers. It draws its audience from amongst the Diaspora (approximately 50,000 Kurds from Turkey, Iran, Iraq and Syria live in Berlin) as well as those curious to better understand the art, culture and society of the Kurdish people, be they from Iran, Iraq, Turkey, or Syria.

The Cultures of Resistance Network is proud to have supported the festival in 2008, and we applaud the successful program that included 45 short, documentary, and feature films. The festival also featured several workshops built around the themes explored in some of the films, as well as discussion about the past, present, and future of Kurdish film. The festival will offer a number of thematic areas, including "Kurds on the map - Films from the new Iraq", "Between the Bosporus and Tigris - Kurdish women on the screen", and "On the way in the EU - the Kurds in Turkey".
