Instituto Raoni

For several years, we have supported indigenous Kayapó opposition to the Brazilian government’s proposed Belo Monte Dam on the Xingu River in the Amazon. The dam would have a disastrous impact on the Kayapó homeland. From the initial indigenous declaration of resistance issued in Raoni, to a 2008 summit in Altamira--the largest indigenous gathering in the Brazilian Amazon in nearly twenty years--up to the present, we have provided funding an assistance to Xingu activists and the Instituto Raoni, an advocacy group that collaborates with them. The Cultures of Resistance network also has a short film in production, “The Battle for the Xingu,” that includes footage from the Altamira summit.
